Brothers Daylon and ShunDerrick Powell combined to run for 500 yards and eight touchdowns in leading the Hoxie Mustangs to a 54-28 victory over the Piggott Mohawks in senior high football action Friday night at Piggott.

Daylon rushed for 300 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. The Mustang quarterback also completed three-of-seven passes, for 71 yards. ShunDerrick finished with 204 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries as Hoxie improved to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in 3A-3 conference play.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start, scoring the game’s first 22 points. Daylon Powell scored on a four-yard run to put Hoxie ahead 6-0 in the first quarter. Later in the period, ShunDerrick Powell found the end zone from 10 yards out, followed by Daylon’s conversion run to make the score 14-0 after one period of play.

ShunDerrick scored on an 80-yard burst in the second quarter. Again, Daylon added the conversion to extend the Mustang lead to 22-0.

Piggott scored a touchdown and two-point conversion later in the second period to cut Hoxie’s lead to 22-8 at halftime.

A 26-point third quarter by the Mustangs put the game out reach. First, Daylon Powell broke free for a 62-yard score. Daylon then passed to Stefan Coleman for the conversion, increasing the Hoxie lead to 30-8.

A touchdown and two-point conversion by the Mohawks made the score 30-16, but Hoxie responded with a 29-yard scamper by Daylon Powell to give the Mustangs a 36-16 cushion.

Hoxie began to pull away, as ShunDerrick Powell raced in from 10 yards out to stretch the Mustang advantage to 42-16. After a Mohawk score cut the leadto 42-22, ShunDerrick Powell broke free for a 47-yard touchdown to give Hoxie a 48-22 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Daylon Powell wasn’t finished, though, capping his big night with a 22-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to put Hoxie up 54-22. Piggott added a late touchdown to set the final score.

In addition to the Powell brothers, Coleman added 16 yards rushing on two carries. Grady Cook had five carries for seven yards, and Cade Forrester had one carry for five yards.

Coleman led Hoxie in receiving with two catches for 57 yards, while Forrester had one catch for 14 yards.

Sam Turner led the defense with eight tackles and six assists, including tackles for loss. Jace Benesch finished with seven tackles, five assists and one tackle for loss. Mario Armstrong had seven tackles, four assists, one sack and three tackles for loss. Forrester recorded four tackles and two assists. Jordan Beasley had four tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss. Peyton Jamison had four tackles, three assists, a sack and one tackle for loss. ShunDerrick Powell recorded three tackles and two assists. Seth Brooks and Cooper Spradlin each had three tackles and one assist. Cook had two tackles and one tackle for loss. Xander Ball, Hunter Rickey and Carson Cooper each recorded one tackle. Jalen Chappell had two assists, and Weston Whited had one assist.

Hoxie hosts Manila for senior night this week. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Crider Field.
