The Hoxie Mustangs stormed back from an early deficit to defeat the Mountain View Yellowjackets 47-16 in senior high football action Friday night at Crider Field.
Trailing 8-0 after a Yellowjacket score, Hoxie quarterback Daylon Powell hit Cade Forrester with a 47-yard touchdown pass. ShunDerrick Powell provided the two-point conversion to even the contest at 8-8.
Hoxie took the lead when Daylon Powell found Stefan Coleman with a 21-yard scoring toss to put the Mustangs in front 14-8.
Daylon Powell scored on a 12-yard keeper. He then ran for the conversion, to give Hoxie a 22-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Mustangs continued to pile on the points in the second quarter. ShunDerrick Powell scored on a nine-yard run and Coleman kicked the PAT to make the score 29-8.
ShunDerrick Powell broke loose for a 39-yard scoring run to extend Hoxie’s lead to 35-8. Later in the period, Daylon Powell uncorked his third touchdown pass of the game, a 49-yard strike to Davie Powell, to give the Mustangs a commanding 41-8 lead at the intermission.
Hoxie’s final points of the game came on Forrester’s 53-yard run in the third quarter, which made the score 47-8. Mountain View added a touchdown and conversion in the fourth quarter to set the final score.
Daylon Powell completed all five of his pass attempts, for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He carried the ball twice for 48 yards and a touchdown.
ShunDerrick Powell led Hoxie in rushing with 86 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Forrester had one carry for a 53-yard touchdown. Coleman had one carry for 17 yards.
Coleman was the leading receiver with two catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Davie Powell had one catch for 49 yards and a touchdown. Forrester had one reception for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Seth Brooks had a 36-yard reception.
Jace Benesch led the Mustang defense with seven tackles, followed by Sam Turner with five. Jalen Chappell, Jordan Beasley and Sawyer Anglin each had two tackles. Chase Guthrie, Mario Armstrong, Cecil Green, Cooper Spradlin, Xander Ball, Louie Simkins, Wes Rogers, Landon Foster, Addison Herring and Noah Morse were each credited with one tackle.
Hoxie improved to 2-0 with the win. The Mustangs play their first road game this week when they travel to Jonesboro to take on the Westside Warriors. Game time is 7 p.m.
