ShunDerrick Powell scored four touchdowns and Stefan Coleman caught three touchdown passes as the Hoxie Mustangs walloped the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots 49-14 on homecoming night at Crider Field.

Hoxie put the game away early, taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Daylon Powell hit Coleman with a 22-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started. Daylon ran for the conversion to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead.

ShunDerrick Powell scored on a 28-yard scamper later in the period. Jalen Chappell kicked the PAT to increase the Mustang lead to 15-0. Daylon Powell found Coleman again, this time for a 30-yard score to put Hoxie ahead 21-0 at the end of the period.

The Mustangs continued to pile on the points in the second quarter. ShunDerrick Powell scored on runs of 20 and 71 yards. Daylon Powell ran for two-points after the second score to extend the lead to 35-0. Hoxie closed out the first half with another big play when Daylon Powell connected with Coleman for a 70-yard touchdown. Chappell’s PAT made the score 42-0 at the intermission.

Palestine-Wheatley got on the scoreboard with a 62-yard run in the third quarter, making the score 42-6. ShunDerrick Powell returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for his fourth score of the evening. Chappell’s extra point gave the Mustangs their final point and a 49-6 lead.

The Patriots added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Quarterback Daylon Powell completed four-of-six pass attempts, for 130 yards and three touchdown. He added 75 rushing yards on five carries.

ShunDerrick Powell finished with 143 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just six carries. Carson Cooper had 21 yards on four carries, and Cannon Dail added nine yards on four carries.

Coleman caught three passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns, and Seth Brooks had one reception for eight yards.

Sam Turner led the Mustang defense with five tackles, an assist, a sack and a tackle for loss. Jace Benesch also had five tackles and an assist. Seith Finney had four tackles and two assists, and Peyton Jamison added three tackles, with two assists. Xander Ball finished with two tackles and an assist, while Grady Cook had two tackles and one tackle for loss.

Mario Armstrong and Chase Guthrie each had two tackles. Cooper Spradlin and Caden Dougan each had a tackle and an assist. Hunter Rickey, Jordan Beasley, Nick Staffa, Louie Simkins, Wes Rogers and Jarrett Thompson each made one tackle. Weston Whited had two assists, and Jake Riggs had an assist. Davie Powell and Cade Forrester each had an interception.

Hoxie remained undefeated on the season at 5-0 and is 2-0 in 3A-3 Conference play. The Mustangs are home again this week when they host the Corning Bobcats on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
