Hoxie quarterback Daylon Powell ran for four touchdowns and passed for two, all in the first half, as the Mustangs built a 48-14 lead before the intermission and cruised to a 55-29 win over the Lakeside Beavers in the 3A state football playoffs Friday night at Crider Field.

The win improved Hoxie’s record to 10-0 on the season and sends the Mustangs on to the second round, where they will host the Newport Greyhounds on Friday.

Daylon Powell wasted no time in getting Hoxie on the scoreboard, getting loose for a 50-yard run just 10 seconds into the game. Jalen Chappell’s extra-points gave the Mustangs a quick 7-0 lead.

ShunDerrick Powell scored on a 17-yard run, and Chappell added the PAT to extend the lead to 14-0 with 8:57 to play in the quarter.

Hoxie’s next two scores came through the air, as Daylon Powell found Stefan Coleman with a 43-yard pass, then later found Cade Forrester for a 46-yard score, as the lead grew to 28-0 at the end of the opening period.

Daylon Powell ran for an 18-yard touchdown, and Chappell booted the extra-point to stretch Hoxie’s advantage to 35-0 early in the second quarter. After a Lakeside touchdown, Daylon found the end zone again, this time on a 53-yard run. Chappell’s PAT put Hoxie ahead 42-6.

Another score by the Beavers cut the lead to 42-14, but Daylon Powell answered with a 45-yard run to close out the first half. Chappell’s extra-point sent the Mustangs to the locker room leading 49-14.

Hoxie’s final points came on Grady Cook’s eight-yard run in the third quarter, which made the score 55-14. Lakeside added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to set the final score.

Daylon Powell’s final numbers included 173 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just seven carries. He completed four-of-nine pass attempts, for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

ShunDerrick Powell ran for 78 yards and a touchdown on five carries, and Forrester had one carry for 41 yards. Cook finished with nine yards and a touchdown on two attempts. Cannon Dail rushed four times for two yards, and Carson Cooper had one yard on three carries.

Coleman caught two passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, while Forrester had two receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Jace Benesch led Hoxie’s defense with 10 tackles and an assist. Peyton Jamison finished with six tackles and an assist. Chase Guthrie had two tackles and two assists, and Louie Simkins added two tackles. Mario Armstrong and Sawyer Anglin each had one tackle and one assist. Jordan Beasley, Hunter Rickey, Xander Ball and Jarrett Thompson each had one tackle, Weston Whited and Caden Dougan each had an assist.

Seth Brooks had two interceptions, while ShunDerrick Powell and Sam Turner each recovered a fumble.

Friday’s game against Newport is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at Crider Field.
