The Hoxie Mustangs trampled the Manila Lions 42-6 in senior high football action Friday night at Hoxie. The senior night victory improved the Mustangs record to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in 3A-3 Conference play and sets up a showdown this week against the Osceola Seminoles, who are 3-0 in the conference.
Against Manila, Hoxie scored the game’s first points on a 4-yard run by quarterback Daylon Powell. Jalen Chappell kicked the extra-point to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Hoxie broke the game open in the second period with 28 unanswered points. Daylon Powell scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 19-yard run to extend the Mustang advantage to 13-0. ShunDerrick Powell found the end zone on a three-yard run to push the score to 19-0.
Later in the quarter, Daylon Powell bolted for a 32-yard touchdown and ShunDerrick Powell added the two-point conversion, giving Hoxie a 27-0 lead. Daylon Powell continued his hot night by connecting with Stefan Coleman for 56-yard touchdown pass. Daylon then ran for the conversion, as the Mustangs took a commanding 35-0 lead into the intermission.
Hoxie’s only points of the second half came on Cade Forrester’s nine-yard run in the third quarter. Chappell added the PAT to stretch the lead to 42-0.
Manila scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to set the final score.
Daylon Powell finished the game with 78 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just five carries. He also completed all four of his pass attempts, for 127 yards and another touchdown.
Forrester was also four-of-four passing, for 26 yards.
ShunDerrick Powell rushed six times for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Grady Cook added 11 yards on three carries. Forrester carried twice for 10 yards and a touchdown. Davie Powell had one carry for six yards, and Coleman had two yards on one carry.
Coleman caught three passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Seth Brooks had three receptions for 23 yards. Xander Ball had one catch for 15 yards, and Davie Powell caught one pass for 10 yards.
Jace Benesch led Hoxie’s defense with seven tackles and three assists. Sam Turner had four tackles, while Davie Powell also contributed four tackles. Mario Armstrong finished with three tackles and one assist, and Noah Morse had three tackles. Forrester, Jordan Beasley, Nick Staffa, Jarrett Thompson and Ethin Romine each recorded two tackles and an assist.
Peyton Jamison had one tackle and four assists, and Louie Simkins had a tackle and two assists. Brooks and Cook each had a tackle and an assist. Seith Finney, Chappell, Sawyer Anglin and Landon Foster each had one tackle. Carson Cooper and Cooper Spradlin each had two assists, and Weston Whited had an assist and one fumble recovery.
Friday’s game at Osceola is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
