The Lakeside Beavers defeated Walnut Ridge 21-14 in the first round of the 3A State Football Playoffs Friday night at Lake Village. The loss ends the Bobcats’ season with a 2-8 overall record.

Walnut Ridge took the lead on Blane Wade’s two-yard run. Parker Carmack kicked the extra-point for a 7-0 Bobcat lead with 7:31 to play in the first quarter.

The Beavers tied the game with a touchdown and PAT with 3:25 remaining in the opening period.

Walnut Ridge regained the lead on Wade’s 14-yard run in the second quarter. Carmack added the PAT to give the Cats a 14-7 advantage with 3:40 to play before halftime.

The Lakeside defense turned in a big play when a Beaver defender intercepted a Walnut Ridge pass and returned it for a touchdown with just seven seconds to play in the first half. The PAT sent the teams to halftime in a 14-14 deadlock.

The only points of the second half came on a short run by Lakeside in the closing seconds of the third quarter. The extra point gave the Beavers a 21-14 lead with one second to play in the period.

Walnut Ridge had the ball deep in Lakeside territory before losing a fumble at the 20-yard line with four minutes to play in the game.

All of the Bobcats’ offense came on the ground, led by Wade, who rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Mari Thomas finished with 87 yards on 26 attempts, and Cole Manning rushed four times for 12 yards.
